You Take the Good, You Take the Bad April 18, 2007

Ah, the facts of life. It seems like it’s always when you’ve stepped out on the ledge that the wind starts blowing. After forgoing the security of a regular income - okay, any income – my car basically decided to implode this past weekend.

First, copious amounts of coolant started leaking from the vehicle’s underbelly and then the Saturn dealership tells me it’s going to cost over $600 to fix. I choked back tears at the thought of losing a good chunk of my diminishing fortune and fought to maintain a positive attitude. Meanwhile, Crappy Happy, as I’d renamed my car, had decided to act the petulant child by emitting a high pitched whining noise telling me (well, the mechanic) that new brake pads and rotors were in order.

Now, luckily while my car was in the shop I watched Rocky Balboa (don’t ask), and learned an important lesson. “It ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”

I was reminded that even though there will be setbacks along the road, if I can choose to press onwards with a positive attitude, then there isn’t anything I can’t overcome. I guess sometimes you just have to rely on the old classics to convey life’s important truths.
